PHOENIX — Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid isn’t ruling out a special offensive package for new quarterback Justin Fields, but he also says that role isn’t the reason the team acquired him.
The Chiefs acquired Fields in a trade with the New York Jets last month. The 11th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Fields promises to bring speed and athleticism to Kansas City’s backup QB spot.
As far as a potential changeup option in short-yardage or goal-line situations? Reid said, “We’ll see,” when asked whether Fields might be asked to run special plays before adding that he needed to talk more with the QB.
“But he’s more than a gadget guy. That’s not how I’m looking at him. That’s not why we brought him in,” Reid said Tuesday at the NFL annual meeting. “We brought him in to play quarterback if he’s needed to play quarterback. And then whatever goes from there.”
The Chiefs, by trading a 2027 sixth-round pick for Fields, are partly betting that their environment can bring out his best.
Reid has a long history of developing quarterbacks. The 27-year-old Fields, meanwhile, has played for three teams: the Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers and the Jets. He will also have some familiarity with the Chiefs’ offense after spending some time under former Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy in Chicago.
“It’s not going to be completely foreign to him,” Reid said of the team’s playbook. “We look forward to getting him in there, but most of all, because he’s a good player. And if Pat (Mahomes) can’t (play) for whatever reason, now you’ve got a legitimate guy in there that can play and win games for you.”
Mahomes continues to trend well this offseason after December surgery to repair a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee. Reid reported this week that Mahomes was “doing good” with his recovery, as the QB tries to accomplish a personal goal of making it back for Week 1.
In the meantime, Fields will get plenty of offseason snaps with the Chiefs’ first-team offense over the next few months.
“I like his game. He can do the dropback game. He can do the movement stuff, play-action, whether it’s a naked or sprint-out game. He has that whole package that he can do,” Reid said. “He understands the screen game and how to set it up. He obviously is going to be one of the better athletes on the field when he’s out there.”
Fields’ speed is particularly impressive. In 2021, he ran a 4.44-second 40-yard dash at his pro day — one of the fastest for a QB prospect.
That trait was evident in last year’s stats as well. Though Fields played only nine games for the Jets, the NFL’s Next Gen Stats had him hitting 15-plus miles per hour on 44 rushes, a total that ranked third among all quarterbacks.
So, will the Chiefs find a spot on the field for that ability, even when Mahomes is healthy?
Reid hinted that something like that is at least possible.
“If he gets bored,” Reid said with a laugh, “we’ll have a couple things for him.”
